“It’s been days since national outcry over the President’s inhumane, barbarous policy of tearing apart detained immigrant families at the U.S. souther border began, and still nothing but deafening silence from Joan Huffman and other members of the Texas Republican Party. At a critical time when she should be using her power as state senator to stand up to the Trump Administration’s anti-immigrant agenda, join the growing coalition of bipartisan leaders in calling for Attorney General Jeff Sessions to halt the DHS policy and work towards common-sense legislative solutions, Joan and her Republican colleagues in the State Legislature have instead chosen to stand idly by as the illegal separation and long-term detention of children continues, debasing our American values and leaving a dark stain on our country’s history. Any elected official unwilling to condemn this atrocious policy is complicit in its immorality. Without further delay, I call on Joan Huffman put party politics aside and immediately join the bipartisan list of legislators, leaders, candidates and first ladies in standing up for basic human decency by condemning this inhumane policy.
